Alaska Airlines is experiencing a system-wide software outage that is affecting check-in, flight operations, and reservations. The outage is affecting the airlines’ ability to check-in passengers and depart flights.
The problem appears to be a computer connection issue. According to a post on the Alaska Airlines website, “Sprint’s system went down at 7:40 a.m.”
At Sea-Tac Airport in Seattle, Washington, where Alaska air is the biggest carrier, long lines of passengers are waiting to be checked in as airline employees issue hand-written boarding passes. As of 9 a.m. Pacific Time, the airline said no Alaska or Horizon flights were departing Sea-Tac.
Alaska Air’s CEO Brad Tilden said a solution to the problem is expected by noon, with operations going back to normal by 5:00 p.m.
Other airlines at Sea-Tac are not affected, according to a Port of Seattle spokesman.
